2015 was a year of major collaborations – Kendrick & J. Cole, Phantogram & Big Boi, Chance & Lil B , Fetty Wap & French Montana and of course Skrillex & Diplo’s massive Jack U project. Looks like the trend is here to stay as we begin 2016 and two of southern hip hop’s biggest names come together for a full length album. Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz give us a 12 track album titled Collegrove – a combination of their respective neighborhoods, College Park and Hollygrove.
You know what you’re getting from these artists when they drop music on their own, but together they actually deliver some of their toughest bars in recent memory. The production on this is solid as well, making for an overall fun album to listen to. When the first announcement of Diplo and Skrillex’s collaborative project which they called Jack Ü came out many didn’t know whether this was a troll, a publicity stunt, or an actual thing. But as time passed, the duo became inseparable. From headlining festivals and throwing a New Years Eve party at Madison Square Garden, Jack Ü, became one of the biggest names and most anticipated projects in the electronic music scene. They dropped the infectious track “Take Ü There” with Kiesza and it was clear that these dudes had something big coming. Now, after months of waiting, we finally get the album we have all been asking for.
Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü is a 10 track album, that encapsulates the broad range of musical influences and production skills that Diplo and Skrillex posses. To have them drop their own projects is a big deal, but the fact that you get two of the scene’s super-producers working on one thing is game changing. Jack Ü proves true that two is better than one, and with the help of some friends like Justin Beiber, Aluna George, and 2 Chainz, this album is a straight up party.
